Dr. Lamine Bouakaz

Global Head Of MSAT & Global Head Of CGT Techdev & Techops at Santen

Dr. Lamine Bouakaz has extensive work experience in various roles within the biopharmaceutical industry. Dr. Lamine is currently the Global Head Cell & Gene Therapy Product Supply at Santen, a position they have held since April 2022. Prior to that, they were the Global Head Manufacturing Cell Therapy at Santen from August 2021 to April 2022.

Before joining Santen, Dr. Bouakaz worked at Bayer from September 2017 to July 2021, where they served as the Senior Global Program and Project Leader for Global Product Supply External Manufacturing. In this role, they led the Development and Technical Readiness Program for the launch and commercial supply and distribution of the Bayer - CureVac Covid-19 vaccine. Dr. Lamine also led global technology transfer projects for late Phase II/III and commercial chemical and biologics products.

From 2007 to 2017, Dr. Bouakaz worked at Novartis in various roles, including Senior Technical Manager, Director Level - Global TechOps Biologics MSAT, and Head Manufacturing Sciences and Technology. Dr. Lamine led product and manufacturing processes lifecycle management, OPEX & Lean projects, and had responsibilities for upstream cell culture processes, scientific support, and pilot plant management.

Dr. Bouakaz began their career in R&D at Carlsberg A/S in 2006, where they worked as an R&D Senior Fellow. Dr. Lamine also gained research experience as an R&D Senior Scientist at Uppsala University from 1999 to 2006.

Prior to that, they worked as a Research Engineer at GE HEALTHCARE BIO-SCIENCES AB in 1998 and as a Research Scientist at Uppsala University in 1997. Dr. Lamine started their career as a Project Engineer at GE HEALTHCARE BIO-SCIENCES AB in 1995 and as a Project Graduate Student at Haldor Topsoe A/S in 1995.

Overall, Dr. Lamine Bouakaz has a strong background in biopharmaceutical manufacturing, technology transfer, and project management, with a focus on cell and gene therapy products.

Dr. Lamine Bouakaz obtained a Baccalaureat in Natural Sciences from Ecole Francaise de Copenhague in 1995. Dr. Lamine then completed a BSc. Eng. in Chemical Engineering from DTU - Technical University of Denmark from 1991 to 1995. Dr. Lamine went on to earn an MSc in Biology/Biological Sciences, General from Uppsala University between 1996 and 1998. Finally, they completed their education with a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Molecular biology and biochemistry from Uppsala University, graduating in 2006.
