Kurt Braitberg

Managing Director-public Markets at San Francisco Employees' Retirement System (SFERS)

Kurt Braitberg has extensive experience in investment management. Kurt currently serves as the Managing Director of Public Markets at the San Francisco Employees' Retirement System (SFERS). In this role, they are responsible for implementing investment policies and strategies within SFERS' Public Equity, Fixed Income, and Private Credit asset classes. Kurt has made significant changes to the public equity portfolio, resulting in top percentile performance. Additionally, they lead SFERS' ESG investing efforts and has developed and executed the initial allocation to private credit.

Kurt also serves as the Chief Investment Officer (CIO) for the Retiree Health Care Trust Fund (RHCTF) at SFERS. As the CIO, they oversee all aspects of the $800 million investment program, including asset allocation, manager selection, and reporting to the RHCTF Board. Kurt has transformed the RHCTF investment portfolio from a passive equity-oriented approach to a diversified approach, introducing and implementing asset classes such as active public equity, real estate, private equity, and risk-mitigating strategies.

Prior to their roles at SFERS, Kurt worked as the Interim CIO, Managing Director at TeamCo Advisers from 2006 to 2017, Principal at Thomas Weisel Partners from 2000 to 2006, Senior Vice President at Portfolio Management Consultants from 1998 to 2000, Assistant Vice President at UBS from 1996 to 1998, Manager of Portfolio Administration/Client Service at BNP Paribas from 1994 to 1996, and Fund Controller at OppenheimerFunds from 1990 to 1994.

Kurt Braitberg, CFA, CAIA, obtained a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a focus on Finance from the University of Northern Colorado in 1990. Kurt later earned the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation from the CFA Institute in 1999 and became a CAIA Charterholder through the CAIA Association in May 2011.
