Environment, Health and Safety Manager at Rural Electric

Garth Backman, CSP has a long history of working in the field of Environment, Health and Safety. Garth began their career in 2000 as an Industrial Hygienist/Asbestos Coordinator for National Steel Corporation. In 2002, they joined Phelps Dodge as a Sr. Safety Specialist, where they worked with divisional management to develop and implement health and safety programs to ensure compliance. Garth also implemented and developed a behavior-based safety observation system and lead a multi-functional team that implemented a program which showed an increase in production by 15%. In 2005, they joined Rio Tinto as a Safety and Quality Engineer and then VT Griffin as a Safety Manager. In 2009, they joined RTS as a Corporate Safety Manager, where they performed a gap and risk analysis to identify areas for improvement regarding the safety program and culture. In 2011, they joined American Leadership Academy as a Science Teacher and obtained a Masters Degree in Education from Arizona State University. In 2018, they joined Dominion Environmental Consultants as an Environment, Health and Safety Manager. In 2020, they joined Oddonetto Construction Inc. as an Environment, Health and Safety Manager and in 2021 they joined Rural Electric, Inc. as an Environment, Health and Safety Manager, where they oversee the development and implementation of a new safety culture from the ground up.

Garth Backman obtained their Bachelor of Science in Industrial Hygiene from Utah State University in 1999. Garth then continued their education at Utah State University, obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Industrial Hygiene in 1999. In 2010, they obtained a Masters in Education from Arizona State University. In November 2019, Garth obtained their Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification from the Board of Certified Safety Professionals.
