Jamal J. Lewis has a diverse work experience in the fields of climate change, energy, and public health. Currently, they serve as the Director of State and Local Policy (Mid-Atlantic and South Regions) at Rewiring America, where they focus on promoting sustainable and equitable electrification. Prior to this role, they held the position of Director of Policy Partnerships and Equitable Electrification at Rewiring America.
In addition to their work at Rewiring America, Jamal is an active member of various organizations and working groups. Jamal J. is a member of the Maryland Commission on Climate Change Mitigation Working Group, where they contribute their expertise in climate change mitigation. Jamal J. also serves as a Board Member for the Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships (NEEP) and as an Advisory Board Member for the DC Sustainable Energy Utility (DCSEU).
Before joining Rewiring America and their involvement in policy and advocacy work, Jamal worked at the Green & Healthy Homes Initiative. During their tenure there, they held multiple roles, including Director of Energy, Health, & Climate, Senior Policy & Technical Assistance Specialist, and Policy & Technical Assistance Specialist. Jamal J. also gained experience as an Environmental Health & Policy Fellow and as an Intern at the organization.
Prior to their work at the Green & Healthy Homes Initiative, Jamal held positions at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health and the Center for Excellence in Environmental Toxicology. Jamal J. served as a Public Health GIS Graduate Teaching Assistant and as the Community Relations Chair for the Black and Latinx Student Caucus at Columbia University.
Jamal's early career included roles as a Researcher at the Center for Excellence in Environmental Toxicology and as a Research Assistant at the Global Water Alliance. Additionally, during their time at the University of Pennsylvania, they were a Peer Advisor for the EES Undergraduate Advisory Board and an Athlete, serving as a Point Guard for the basketball team. Jamal J. was a starter for two seasons and co-captain during their senior season.
Jamal J. Lewis completed their education with a Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) degree in Environmental Health from Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. Jamal J. attended this school from 2016 to 2018. Prior to that, they earned their Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Environmental Studies from the University of Pennsylvania, where they studied from 2012 to 2016. For their high school education, Jamal obtained a High School Diploma from Sidwell Friends School between 2007 and 2012. The field of study for their high school diploma is unknown.
