Derek Manahan is an undergraduate researcher at the Innovative Genomics Institute, focusing on genetically engineering Saccharomyces cerevisiae for biomanufacturing bromoform to potentially reduce methane emissions from livestock. Currently serving as a STEP Associate at UC Berkeley Student Technology Services, Derek manages inventory and support services for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Additionally, Derek has interned at NAVCAL, guiding nontraditional UC Berkeley students in essential skills, and has also served as Operations Director at RootED to assist rising seniors from marginalized communities in accessing higher education. Recent experiences include a Winter Research Internship at Think Neuro, Inc., conducting a bibliometric analysis in neural circuit research, and prior involvement with EarthTeam and The GLOBE Program, focusing on environmental sustainability and agricultural research. Derek is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Bioengineering at the University of California, Berkeley, complemented by a minor in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.
