Gabriel Nelson is a highly experienced robotics professional with a strong background in mechanical engineering and extensive expertise in control systems for dynamic legged robots. Currently serving as Research Lead at The Boston Dynamics AI Institute since January 2023, Nelson previously held the position of Chief Scientist at Figure, focusing on human-like walking and movement. As a Senior Controls Engineer at Boardwalk Robotics, expertise in dynamic legged robot controls was further developed. Nelson's significant tenure at Boston Dynamics included the development of core control algorithms for various bipedal and quadrupedal robots, as well as perception work utilizing stereo vision and Lidar. With a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University, alongside prior roles such as Roboticist at Google and Research Associate & Instructor, Nelson has built a comprehensive career in robotics and engineering.
