Research Associate Scientist at ProteinQure

Sungwon Hwang, Ph.D., currently serves as a Research Associate Scientist at ProteinQure since June 2023. Prior to this role, Sungwon held a Postdoctoral Fellow position at the University of Toronto, where research focused on the structural characterization of phage protein complexes from Pseudomonas aeruginosa using X-ray crystallography. As a PhD Candidate at the University of Toronto from September 2017 to November 2022, research involved elucidating the mechanisms of type II-C anti-CRISPR proteins that inhibit Cas9, leading to multiple publications in prestigious journals. Additionally, a research volunteer experience at The Hospital for Sick Children involved characterizing ribonuclease inhibitor 1 (RNH1) for a CRISPR-based COVID diagnostic test under the guidance of Ronald Cohn. Earlier, an undergraduate research assistant role at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy included investigating ribosomally synthesized peptides, contributing to publications in notable chemical journals. Sungwon completed a PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
