Maria Holmström has been working in the scientific field since 2005. Maria began their career as a Project Assistant at Chalmers University of Technology and SLU, the Swedish agricultural university, where they worked with polysaccharide extraction from jellyfish. In 2004, they completed their Ph.D in Odontological Science at Malmö University, where they studied microbial biofilms on peritoneal dialysis catheters. From 2011 to 2013, they were a Post Doc at Chalmers University of Technology, where they studied the slip phenomenon and its effect on fluid flow in nano- and micro-sized channels, using computer simulations (COMSOL). Maria also studied flow in surface-modified PDMS microchannels using the micro-PIV technique and produced some fluorescent silica particles. In 2014, they were a Guest Researcher at NIOM - Nordic Institute of Dental Materials, and a Post Doc at Chalmers University of Technology, where they worked on making antibacterial implants using antimicrobial peptides. In 2016, they began working as a Post Doc at UMCG Groningen, where they worked on antimicrobial surfaces and biofilms, using gold nanoparticles and quaternary ammonium compounds, and studied eukaryotic cellular responses of plasmon generated heat. Maria currently works as a Scientist at Promimic.

Maria Holmström obtained a Master of Science in Engineering Biology with a focus on Biomaterials from Linköping University in 2005. In 2003, they participated in a study abroad program at Queensland University of Technology, where they studied Materials Science and Bioinformatics for one semester. Maria is currently pursuing a Doctor of Odontological Sciences at Malmö University.
