Matthew Thompson has extensive work experience with the U.S. Coast Guard, where they served for 30 years as an active duty military officer and in various leadership roles, including as Captain-Sector Commander in St. Petersburg, Florida, Commander of the Coast Guard Officer Boards, Panels, Promotions and Separations Branch, and as Department Head for Response and Operations at Coast Guard Sector San Francisco. In 2022, they joined Port Tampa Bay as the Director of Cruise Operations and Emergency Management, and they are set to become the Vice President of Operations in April 2023.

Matthew Thompson earned a Bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts/Management from Excelsior University in 2007. Matthew also received certification in Joint Professional Military Education, Intermediate from the USAF Air Command and Staff College, with an end year not specified, but before 2019.
