Dan Gilkison began their work experience in 1995 at Otak, where they held the role of Project Manager from June 1995 to September 2001. Following this, they joined the Port of Portland in September 2001 as a Project Manager, where they have continued to work.

Dan Gilkison earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Oregon State University, which they attended from 1992 to 1995. Dan later obtained a Professional Engineer (PE) certification from the State of Oregon in July 2000.
