Eric J. Black, Ph.D.

CTO and Founder at Pivotal Commware

Eric J. Black, Ph.D. has held a variety of positions in the technology industry, beginning in 1996 when they served as an Electrical Systems Journeyman in the United States Air Force. After their honorable discharge, they took on the role of Undergraduate Research Assistant at the University of Washington in 2002. In 2003, they became a Graduate Research Assistant at Carnegie Mellon University, where they developed a platform for study of hybrid recording physics in hard disk drives and constructed a test bed for thermal characterization of hard disk drive heads. In 2005, they took on a Research Intern role at Seagate Technology before returning to Carnegie Mellon University as a Post Doctoral Researcher in 2006. In 2011, they joined Boeing as an Electrophysics Engineer/Scientist and co-authored two successful proposals. In 2014, they took on the role of Research Scientist at Intellectual Ventures, where they merged the concept of tightly coupled arrays with holographic metamaterial beamformers. Finally, in 2016, they became the CTO and Founder of Pivotal Commware, where they lead a team of engineering and research professionals in bringing Holographic Beamforming to the wireless world.

Eric J. Black, Ph.D. began their educational career at the University of Washington, where they earned a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Electrical Engineering with a Minor in Mathematics between 2000 and 2003. Eric J. then continued their studies at Carnegie Mellon University, where they earned a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2004. Finally, they completed their Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University in 2010.
