Ruben Alvarez-Fernandez has a diverse work experience spanning various roles in the fields of bioinformatics, molecular biology, and plant genetics.
Ruben began their career as a Laboratory Manager and Departmental Research Technician at the University of Essex, where they studied the response of Arabidopsis to high-light stress and managed a lab with 20 people.
Ruben then went on to work as a Scientific Curator - Molecular Biology Expert at Elsevier Ltd, where they collaborated in the development of the Methods Navigator and worked remotely in a multi-country team.
At the University of Cambridge, Ruben worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow and Casual Demonstrator and Supervisor, conducting research in plant petal cell morphology and teaching and supervising students.
Ruben also worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Universidad de Oviedo, where they focused on water stress in Eucalyptus and developed a pump-fed hydroponic bath.
More recently, Ruben has worked at the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute and PhoreMost Ltd. At the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute, they served as a Research Associate and managed a team of bioinformaticians, contributed to the development of a CRISPR screening pipeline, and facilitated communication between different departments.
Currently, at PhoreMost Ltd, Ruben holds the position of Principal Bioinformatician and is responsible for library design, analyses, and decision making. Ruben has been instrumental in automating and improving the NGS pipeline and expanding capabilities in peptide structure.
Overall, Ruben Alvarez-Fernandez has demonstrated expertise in bioinformatics, molecular biology, genetics, and research management throughout their career.
