David Schurman is the Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer at Perennial, where they lead scientific computing, software engineering, machine learning, and product innovation for carbon removal through agricultural soils. David has received several accolades for their work, including being named in Forbes 30 Under 30 (Social Impact) in 2023 and TIME Best Invention of the Year in 2022. David has also been recognized by Fast Company's World Changing Idea and the United Nations as a top AI solution to the SDGs. At Perennial, they utilize a stack that includes Python (sklearn, pytorch), Airflow, Docker, GDAL, Serverless/Flask, React, and AWS/Azure.
In addition to their role at Perennial, David is a Council Member at Forbes Technology Council since 2022.
Prior to their current positions, David worked at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory as a Human Interfaces Group Affiliate. David then served as a Lead Software Engineer, where they developed the Perseverance Rover's PIXLISE platform. David also held the position of a Fellow at Lightspeed Venture Partners.
David's earlier work experience includes being a Lead Project Manager at Brown University School of Engineering, where they led a team to create a sundial sculpture. David also managed contracts for manufacturing and site operations. David has also worked as a Scientific Computing Intern at NASA, where they worked with geospatial data on a NASA supercomputer to study GHG emissions and atmospheric impacts of global wildfires. David received an award for best scientific data visualization during this internship. David's earliest experience was as a Student Researcher at NCAR, where they researched large-scale oceanic carbon removal. This work led to a conference poster and journal submission.
David Schurman has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Computer Science with a concentration in AI/ML and Philosophy from Brown University. In addition to their degree, they also hold a Technician Class Amateur Radio License, which they obtained from the Federal Communications Commission in January 2017.
