Michael Tiemann has a diverse work experience spanning multiple industries and roles. Michael is currently serving as a Project Lead at OS-Climate, where they are involved in building climate-aligned analytic tools and a public Data Commons. Prior to this, they worked as the Principal at Manifold Recording, an Ambassador at the Fedora Project, and held various positions at Red Hat, including VP of Open Source Affairs and CTO. Michael has also founded both Cygnus Support and Cygnus Solutions, pioneering commercial support for free software and contributing to the development of the open-source software subscription model. Additionally, they worked at MCC as an MTS IV, conducting research on compiler construction and attribute grammars, and initiating the development of the GNU C++ compiler.
Michael Tiemann pursued their education at Stanford University from 1988 to 1989, where they were a Ph.D. candidate in Electrical Engineering. Prior to that, they obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, attending from 1982 to 1986. In 2012, Tiemann also acquired a 2nd-Degree Blackbelt in To-Shin Do Ninjutsu from the Chapel Hill Quest Center.
