Paul van der Maas

Senior Software Engineer at Onica by Rackspace Technology

Paul van der Maas has a diverse work experience, starting with their current role as a Senior Software Engineer at Onica by Rackspace Technology since March 2020. In this role, they utilize AWS Lambda and Step Functions to implement business logic triggered by various events and also uses ETL to move and transform large amounts of data. Additionally, Paul utilizes the AWS SDK to write scripts to clean and extract data from live production environments, gaining knowledge in managing AWS IAM users, roles, and policies.

As a Senior Software Engineer, Paul introduced and implemented Agile methodology with two-week sprints and daily stand-ups and set up Git environments using master and development branches.

Paul also founded Centropoly, LLC in September 2014 and served as Lead Software Engineer until February 2017. In this role, they developed a web crawler in object-oriented PHP, used regular expressions to validate data, and ported PHP code to Java.

Prior to starting their own venture, Paul worked as an Associate Software Engineer at RetailMeNot, Inc. from January 2013 to June 2014. During their time there, they learned to work in an Agile environment using Jira, Git, and Github, improved PHP, MySQL, HTML, CSS, JavaScript based monolithic codebase, and made performance improvements to the front-facing website and CMS.

Additionally, Paul has experience as a Bioinformatics Research Assistant at Lamar University, where they redesigned algorithms for multi-core systems, developed command-line applications using languages such as C, C++, and CUDA, and debugged and profiled applications written in C, C++, and CUDA.

Lastly, Paul started their career as a Junior Programmer at Fontys University in August 2005. In this role, they used VB.NET to develop a tool that aided in the migration from a large LDAP database to a SQL Server database.

Overall, Paul van der Maas has a strong background in software engineering, with expertise in AWS, web development, Agile methodology, and algorithm design and development.

Paul van der Maas obtained a Propaedeutic Certificate in Informatics from Fontys University of Applied Sciences, where they studied from 2004 to 2005. Subsequently, they pursued a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Computer Science at Lamar University, completing their studies from 2007 to 2012.
