One Tree Planted, Inc. (OTP) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Shelburne, Vermont, USA, dedicated to fostering a sustainable and resilient future through innovative nature based solutions rooted in the science of trees.

We are seeking a qualified Independent Consultant (IC) to support OTP in the management of landscape restoration projects across French-speaking African countries. The selected consultant will ensure that projects align with OTP’s global strategic objectives and deliver impactful outcomes on the ground.

One Tree Planted works with a coalition of organizations in Africa to drive large-scale restoration efforts. The IC will be responsible for engaging, managing, and reporting on a portfolio of 20 to 30 landscape restoration projects in French-speaking African countries including: Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Togo, Mali, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Burkina Faso, CAR, and Benin. The consultant will work closely with implementing grassroots organizations, internal teams, and external partners to ensure successful project implementation and outcomes are achieved and reported.

OTP is looking for an experienced consultant comfortable working with grassroots organisations, collaborating with internal and external team members to achieve large scale restoration initiatives. The IC should have a good understanding of ecological restoration, agroforestry and reforestation needs of the region.

Scope of Work:

The consultant will be responsible for the following Tasks:

  • Project Management: Oversee and ensure effective management of 20-30 restoration projects across French speaking African countries.

  • Partner Relationship Management: Maintain and strengthen implementation partner relationships, monitor project progress, and ensure OTP standards are followed.

  • Support and Oversight: Assist implementation partners in achieving project outcomes, timelines, budgets and reporting requirements.

  • Monitoring and Verification: Collaborate with measurement and verification teams to ensure accurate impact measures are collected and verified for each project.

  • Capacity Development: Identify and address capacity needs of implementation partners to ensure effective project completion.

  • Site Visits: Conduct project site visits to assess project delivery, validate results and support capacity development.

  • Fundraising Support: Contribute to fundraising proposal development including providing technical project/program details.

  • Communications Support: Assist communications and marketing teams to collect media assets necessary to deliver compelling communications.

  • Translation: Translate materials between French and English as needed.

  • Other tasks as assigned.

Deliverables:

  • Monthly report to team leader on tasks and deliverables.

  • Progress reports on the status of each project recorded in the project management platform at least twice over a 12-month period (Airtable).

  • At least two bi-annual reports completed by each partner.

  • Updated and accurate impact measures for all projects.

  • Capacity-building plans and actions for implementation partners.

  • Technical inputs for fundraising proposals.

  • Media assets and communication materials as required.

  • Translated documents and materials as requested.

Consultant Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environment, conservation, agroforestry, or related fields (master’s preferred).

  • Minimum of 3 years of regional project management experience.

  • Fluent in both French and English language, both written and oral.

  • Excellent writing and communication skills.

  • Self-starter happy to work remotely.

  • Strong analytical skills and proactive attitude to identify improvement opportunities.

  • Proven experience in leading and managing grassroots community led reforestation, agroforestry or landscape restoration projects.

  • Strong technical skills, including experience in project management and data management platforms.

  • Proficiency in project management software (Airtable), and Google suite of tools.

  • Environmental monitoring experience is a plus – drone, GIS, and other tools.

  • Ability to travel frequently within Africa (estimated ~20% of the year).

  • Passion for environmental conservation and sustainability across Africa.

Proposal Submission Details:

  • Cover Letter: A brief cover letter summarizing your qualifications and experience relevant to this project.

  • CV/Resume: Detailed CV or resume highlighting relevant experience and qualifications.

  • Financial Proposal: A detailed budget proposal.

  • References: At least three references from previous clients or employers.

Proposals will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Relevant experience and qualifications (55%)

  • Cost-effectiveness of the financial proposal (25%)

  • References and past performance (20%)

Contract Duration:

  • The contract will be for a duration of one year, with the possibility of extension based on performance and project needs.
