Paal Krokene has extensive experience in research and academia, with a focus on bioeconomy and forest research. Paal started their career as a PhD fellow at the Norwegian Forest Research Institute in 1992 and worked there until 2001, during which they also served as a researcher. Paal then joined the Norwegian Forest and Landscape Institute as a Research Professor/Seniorforsker from 2006 to 2015. Since 2015, Paal Krokene has been working as a Research Professor at the NIBIO Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research.

Paal Krokene obtained their high school education from Stabekk videregående skole from 1981 to 1984. Paal then went on to pursue higher education at the University of Oslo (UiO), where they obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Ecology from 1986 to 1996.
