Mary Shortall has a strong background in labor and political organizations. Mary started their career in 2000 with the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Labour, where they worked until 2023. During this time, they were also involved with the Canadian Labour Congress. In 2013, they became the President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Labour. From January 2023, they retired from their position at the NL Federation on Labour/ Canadian Labour Congress, but remains active in the labor movement. In October 2023, they assumed the role of President for the New Democratic Party of Canada.
Mary Shortall attended Memorial University of Newfoundland from 1975 to 1978, where they studied French.
