Murari Man Shrestha

Deputy Director, Preventive Oncology at Nepal Cancer Hospital and Research Center

Dr. Shrestha is one of the senior Medical Epidemiologists working in the field of cancer. He has been contributing in the field of health care, preventive medicine and cancer prevention at national, regional and local levels for the last fifteen years. At NCHRC, he has been providing technical support in conducting cancer awareness, early detection of cancer through screening programs in the valley and in various districts of Nepal. He is also involved in health worker’s training and research activities in cancer and other health related fields.

He did his Doctor of Medicine (MD) from Crimea Medical Institute, Simferopol, USSR (1985); Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Medical Epidemiology from Mahidol University, Bangkok Thailand (1993); Biostatistics & Epidemiology Course from Johns Hopkins University, Maryland, Baltimore USA (2003). He attended several national and international training courses on communicable and non-communicable diseases, outbreak investigation and response, disaster management & health-related other courses.

At NCHRC, he holds the position of deputy director in preventive oncology division. He is involved in several committees such as infection prevention and control (IPC), clinical governance, hospital research board (HRB) and medical record subcommittee.

As a medical professional, he served at district and central level hospitals and institutions under Government of Nepal/MoHP (1985-1995). He worked as head of department at department of cancer prevention and research at National level government hospital BPKMCH, Bharatpur Chitawan (1995-2005). He served at WHO country office Nepal (2005-2011) and WHO SEARO Delhi India as international professional (2011-2013). He has received many national and international trainings and appreciation for his contribution in the field of health care.

He believes that majorities of cancer are preventable and they can be effectively treated. Education, public awareness and cancer screening programs play a crucial role in prevention and control of cancers. He is also reviewer of many national and international journals on health care, clinical trials and cancer epidemiology.
