Richard Schrader's work experience starts in 1983 as the Director of Public Affairs at the New York State Trial Lawyers Association, where they led campaigns to raise workers compensation rates, expand OSHA protections, protect the right to jury trials, and oppose a cap on pain and suffering awards. Richard also led a campaign against the death penalty.

In 1990, Schrader became the Deputy Commissioner at the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs until 1993, when they were promoted to Commissioner. In this role, they regulated consumer and business law, led enforcement actions, and worked to pass laws to strengthen consumer protections.
