Melissa Amarawardana has a diverse work experience spanning over several years. Melissa is currently working as a Communications Manager at the National Audubon Society since August 2022. Prior to this, they worked at Catalist where they held the role of Lead Designer from April 2018 to August 2022, and also served as a Marketing Associate from May 2015 to April 2018. Melissa also worked as an International Marketing Manager at Avionics Interface Technologies from May 2010 to May 2015. Before that, they worked as a Program Instructor at the Close Up Foundation from January 2010 to May 2010. Melissa also gained experience as a Contracted Assistant/Visual Aid Specialist at Planning, Arrangements, Logistics Specialist, LLC; USDA Farm Service Agency from September 2008 to December 2009. Additionally, they worked as a Knight Program Intern at the International Center for Journalists from April 2008 to August 2008. Melissa's earlier roles include being a Legislative Assistant and Policy Intern at the Council for the National Interest from May 2007 to April 2008 and February 2007 to May 2007 respectively.

Melissa Amarawardana obtained their Bachelor of Arts degree in International Peace and Conflict Resolution from American University in the years 2007 to 2009. Prior to that, they pursued their studies in Journalism and Political Science at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln from 2004 to 2006. Later, they attended the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where they completed their Master of Science degree in Political Science between 2013 and 2015.
