Shannon Faulkhead

Head, First Peoples Research & Collections at Museums Victoria

Shannon Faulkhead has a diverse work experience spanning over three decades. Shannon began their career in 1990 as a Personnel Officer at the Commonwealth Department of Human Services and Health. From 1994 to 2001, they worked as a Librarian and Information Manager at the Koorie Heritage Trust Inc. Shannon then moved on to become the Assistant Chief Executive Officer (2001-2002) and later the Chief Executive Officer (2002-2003) at the same organization.

In 2006 and 2007, Shannon worked as a Project Manager for the 'Trust and Technology: building an archival system for Indigenous oral memory' project, a collaborative effort between various institutions. Shannon also held the role of Research Fellow at Monash University from 2008 to 2010.

From 2011 to 2019, Shannon served as a Finkel Fellow and Senior Research Fellow at Monash University, working on the Monash Country Lines Archive project. Shannon'sresponsibilities included constructing a decolonized living archive and facilitating knowledge sharing among researchers and communities.

Since 2018, Shannon has been associated with Museums Victoria. Shannon initially served as the Acting Head of the First Peoples Department and currently holds the position of Head, First Peoples Research & Collections. Shannon'srole involves providing strategic leadership and overseeing the department's operations, with a focus on incorporating the knowledge and cultures of Australia's First Peoples into the museum's experiences.

Shannon Faulkhead completed their education in several stages. Shannon began by earning a Higher School Certificate from Mildura High School in 1986. Seven years later, in 1990, they obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Librarianship from Ballarat University College. Shannon then pursued further studies, achieving a Graduate Certificate in Applied Science (Environment & Heritage Interpretation) from Deakin University in 1997. In 1998, they obtained a Graduate Diploma in Natural and Cultural Heritage Interpretation from the same university. Shannon's highest level of education is a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Indigenous Studies, which they acquired from Monash University in 2008.
