Rob Penney has a diverse work experience in the field of rugby. Rob started their career in 1996 as the CEO of Marlborough Rugby Football Union. From 2003 to 2005, they worked as the Canterbury A Assistant Coach at the Canterbury Rugby Football Union. Following this, they joined the Crusaders Rugby team as an Assistant Coach (lineouts and skills) from November 2004 to July 2005. In 2006, Penney became the Head Coach at the Canterbury Rugby Football Union and held this position until June 2012. Rob then moved on to become the Head Coach at Munster Rugby in June 2012, where they currently hold the position.
