Peter Donahue

Art & Design Chair, English at MORRISTOWN-BEARD SCHOOL

Peter Donahue joined the English department in 2014, after seven years of rabble-rousing, Socratic mischief and general pedagogical subversion in a large public school. He was drawn to MBS for its environment of academic risk taking and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

He brings to his Humanities English classes his drive to ask trenchant questions about how and why they teach writing. Ever since his graduate work in composition and rhetoric at Seton Hall University (BA '05, MA '06), Peter's not happy unless he's exploding a paradigm. That is, not just assigning an essay, but inspiring a student to reassess and reinvent her approach to writing.

Peter's a writer himself: his poetry has appeared in journals like The Lyric, Exit 13, and Verdad. His science fiction can be found in Ripples in Space and Metaphorosis. He also blogs about teaching and writing, publishes a webcomic, and is currently working on a novel. Peter's creative work influences his life at MBS, as well: he advises the upper-school art and literary magazine, Mariah, and collaborates with art and design teachers to create cross-disciplinary courses.
