Daniel Birch is a Visiting Research Scientist at MERL since May 2017, specializing in the development of numerical models and physics simulations for freeform optics using Matlab, Python, and CUDA C. Prior to this, Daniel contributed to innovative lighting technologies as an intern at MERL and taught physics courses at Peabody Veterans Memorial High School and Lawrence Public Schools. Daniel's academic journey includes a Ph.D. in Oceanography from UC San Diego and a master's degree in Systems Engineering from Boston University. Previous research roles involved developing digital systems for oceanographic data and creating numerical models of plankton distribution, demonstrating a strong background in both applied research and education in the sciences.
