Joe DeMelin has extensive work experience in the maritime industry. Joe started their career in 2004 with Norwegian Cruise Line, where they worked as a Staff Chief Engineer for over seven years. In 2004, they also joined MEBA Dist 1-PCD (AFL-CIO) as a Chief Engineer and worked there until their next role. In 2012, they worked as a Chief Engineer at Island Commuter Corporation until 2016, when they transitioned to APL as a First Assistant Engineer. Additionally, they briefly worked at Alaska Tanker Company as a First Assistant Engineer in 2012.

Joe DeMelin attended Falmouth High School from 1995 to 1998. Joe then pursued a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy from 1998 to 2003. In terms of additional certifications, Joe obtained various qualifications at different institutions. These include the Advanced Engine Training Course (W46) at the Wartsila Land and Sea Academy in January 2011, the Hazardous Materials Technician (MEBAMD-215) certification at the Calhoon MEBA Engineering School in March 2010, and the First Assistant Engineer of Steam or Gas Turbine Vessels of any horsepower certification from the U.S. Coast Guard in May 2009. Joe also completed the Crisis Management and Human Behavior Course at the Paul Hall Maritime Center in November 2008, the ISPS Crew Security Awareness Training (institution unknown) in November 2008, and the Chief Engineer of Motor Vessels of any horsepower certification from the U.S. Coast Guard in May 2008. Additionally, Joe obtained various other certifications, such as the Crowd Management Course from the Paul Hall Maritime Center in November 2007, the Marinfloc EBBWCS CD 2.0 Oily Water Separator and White Box Training from Marinfloc AB in March 2006, the Azipod Engineering Course - ENG21 from ABB in November 2005, the High Voltage Training Course H-02 for Technical Personnel from Tonsberg Maritime Fagskole in November 2005, and the MAN B&W Diesel 48/60B Engine Mechanical Maintenance certification from MAN Diesel & Turbo in November 2005. Furthermore, Joe completed the Basic/Advanced Fire Fighting training at the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy in June 2003. It is also mentioned that they hold an STCW certification from the U.S. Coast Guard, although specific details about this certification are not provided.
