Akis Tsiotsios

Lead Data Scientist at MarineTraffic

Akis Tsiotsios has a diverse work experience in the field of data science and machine learning. Akis is currently working as a Lead Data Scientist at Kpler, where they started in June 2023. Prior to that, they held the same role at MarineTraffic from December 2020 to the present. At MarineTraffic, they led the design, prototyping, and deployment of various data science and machine learning algorithms to model the behavior of ships and make predictions in the maritime ecosystem.

Before their role at MarineTraffic, Akis worked as an AI/Machine Learning Instructor at Agile Actors #learning starting from March 2019. Akis also served as a Senior Data Scientist at Sentio Solutions, Inc. from February 2019 to December 2020. At Sentio Solutions, they prototyped and delivered machine learning and signal processing algorithms for the company's emotion-recognition product, based on time series and sequential data from biomedical sensors.

Earlier in their career, Akis worked as a Data Scientist at Transport for London from January 2017 to February 2019, where they developed machine learning solutions for predictive maintenance and train failure classification. Akis also conducted statistical hypothesis-testing analyses related to fleet failures.

Akis has a strong academic background, having worked as a Dyson Research Fellow at the Dyson Robotics Lab from October 2015 to November 2016. Prior to that, they were a Research Assistant and PhD Candidate at Imperial College London from October 2011 to September 2015, where they designed computer vision and machine learning algorithms for underwater object detection and 3D reconstruction. Akis also presented their work for the EU FP7 Noptilus project.

Additionally, Akis has experience as a Visiting Research Scientist at Carnegie Mellon University in March 2014, and they served in the Artillery Corps during their military service from November 2010 to August 2011. Akis started their research career as a Research Intern at the Information Technologies Institute from October 2009 to July 2010.

Akis Tsiotsios completed their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Computer Vision at Imperial College London in 2015. Prior to this, they pursued their BSc and MSc in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), finishing in 2010. During their undergraduate studies, in 2008, they participated in the ERASMUS Student Exchange Programme as a Visiting Student at the Department of Electronics, at Universitat de Barcelona.
