Neill Atkinson has a diverse work experience in the field of history. Neill started their career in 1990 as a Researcher/Editorial Officer at the Department of Internal Affairs, where they worked till 1999. From 2000 to 2002, they worked as a Contract Historian at the Ministry for Culture and Heritage. Neill then joined the Ministry for Culture and Heritage again in 2002, this time as a Historian. Neill worked on various projects and contributed to the NZHistory.net website until 2008. From 2008 to 2011, they served as a Senior Historian, managing projects and leading the development of the 28th Maori Battalion website. Later, from 2011 to 2015, they worked as the Chief Historian, managing the History Group and promoting New Zealand history to the public. Since November 2015, Neill has been in the position of Chief Historian and Manager of Heritage Content, overseeing staff, budget, and the work program of the History Group at the Ministry for Culture and Heritage.
Neill Atkinson attended The University of Auckland from 1985 to 1990, where they obtained a first-class Hons MA degree in History.
