Jenny Libien, M.D., Ph.D., Chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine overseesthe Anatomic and Clinical Laboratories, working closely with the Director of Laboratories andthe Director of Anatomic Pathology to provide quality diagnostic servicesat Maimonides Medical Center. Dr. Libien also serves as Chair of Pathology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center where she is an Associate professor of Pathology and Neurology. Dr. Libien graduated fromSUNY Downstate's College of Medicine and School of Graduate Studies, completing her M.D./ Ph.D. under the mentorship of Dr. Ira S. Kass and Dr. Todd C. Sacktor. She did a residency in Anatomic Pathology and a fellowship in Neuropathology at Columbia University Medical Center/New York Presbyterian Hospital and then served as an instructor on the faculty of Columbia prior to joining SUNY Downstate's faculty in 2006. She joined Maimonides Medical Center in 2018. Dr. Libien's clinical and research work focuses on the neuropathologic characterization of neurologic diseases and she has a particular interest in neurodegenerative diseases. Her current research, in collaboration with Dr. Ivan Hernandez, is investigating how signaling pathways and nucleolar integrity important for memory formation are altered during Alzheimer's disease (AD) and if these pathways contribute to cognitive reserve and successful aging.
