Brent Thoennes has worked in a variety of roles over the years. In 2021, they began working as a Research and Development Engineer for LulzBot. From 2017 to 2021, they worked as a Test Engineer and Service Troubleshooter for Applied Engineering, Inc. From 2008 to 2017, they were a Diesel Mechanic at Prairie Implement, where they were responsible for the repair and maintenance of ag equipment and new equipment set-up. Prior to that, from 2004 to 2008, they served as a Field Artilleryman for the Minnesota Army National Guard.

Brent Thoennes received their Associate of Arts and Sciences (AAS) from Alexandria Technical and Community College in 2008, having studied Diesel Mechanics Technology/Technician. Brent then attended North Dakota State University, graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Agricultural Engineering in 2017.
