In 1993, they enrolled at the University of Konstanz and obtained a Vordiplom (pre-diploma) in Economics, which they completed in 1995. Seeking further education, they joined the University of Massachusetts Amherst from 1995 to 1997 and earned a Master of Science degree in Resource Economics. Continuing their academic pursuits, they stayed at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and completed their Ph.D. in Resource Economics from 1997 to 2000.
