Steve serves as the chief legal officer of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, responsible for leading all strategic and tactical legal initiatives related to the organization and its business activities as well as managing the legal function, including overseeing the lawyers and staff in the Office of the General Counsel and outside counsel. He works closely with senior management, and the Board of Trustees and its committees, in connection with the development and implementation of key corporate strategies and policies, complex business transactions, and the negotiation and implementation of critical agreements.
Steve joined Fred Hutch after 18 years with The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he served as Senior Vice President and General Counsel, Legal and Regulatory Affairs, managing and directing six departments while developing and implementing institutional policies and enhanced security measures dealing with evolving physical, cybersecurity and IP threats. Prior to joining The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Steve spent 15 years in private practice, most recently as a Partner with Quarles & Brady Streich Lang, LLP in Tucson, AZ, focusing on corporate bankruptcy.
Steven earned his Master of Laws (LL.M.) from the University of Houston Law Center, his J.D. from the University of Iowa College of Law and his B.A. from Luther College.
