Dean Smith started their work experience as a Manager at the Liberal Party in 1996. Dean then held various roles within the party, including Manager of Parliamentary and Policy at the Federal Secretariat. In 2001, they worked as Chief of Staff at the Office of the Minister for Aged Care before becoming a Principal Policy Advisor at the Office of the Premier of Western Australia in 1998. Dean also served as a Senior Advisor at the Office of the Prime Minister in 1998. From 2002 to 2004, they worked as a Special Advisor at the Office of the Minister for Justice and Customs. In 2002, they became the Head of Insurance Strategy at IAG and later served as the General Manager of Government Relations. Dean then worked as the General Manager of Government Relations at SingTel Optus until 2009. Dean briefly served as the Chief Executive of Enhance Corporate in 2009 before establishing their own consulting firm, Smith & Duda Consulting, in 2010. In 2012, Dean became a Senator and Chief Government Whip in the Senate for the Liberal Party.
Dean Smith attended Mirrabooka Senior High School from 1982 to 1986. Dean then obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Politics and Industrial Relations from The University of Western Australia from 1987 to 1990. Later, they pursued a Graduate Diploma in Insurance and Finance from the Australian New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance (ANZIIF) from 2003 to 2004.
