Michel Mawad

Dr. Michel E. Mawad assumed the presidency of LAU on October 1, 2020, having served as the dean of the Gilbert and Rose-Marie Chagoury School of Medicine since February 2017.

In the span of four years, Dr. Mawad restructured the school of medicine, enhanced the curricula, promoted clinical research and clinical practice both at the school and LAU Medical Center-Rizk Hospital, and initiated new fellowship programs. He gradually increased enrollment, and forged affiliations with institutions and hospitals to accommodate the growing number of our residents over and above LAU Medical Center-Rizk Hospital’s absorptive capacity. He also ensured the development and completion of the first integrated strategic plan for the school of medicine and the hospital.

Prior to joining LAU, he spent two years building a stroke center as a member of the Neurological Institute at the renowned Cleveland Clinic in Abu Dhabi. He brought his experience to bear in establishing the first and only Comprehensive Stroke Center in Lebanon, housed at the LAU Medical Center-Rizk Hospital.

Dr. Mawad’s earlier career in academia stretched over 10 years at Columbia University Hospitals in New York City and 30 years at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Among his many achievements and the key positions he held at Baylor in the departments of Radiology, Neuroradiology, Neurosurgery, Neurology and Ophthalmology, he pioneered minimally invasive techniques for the treatment of cerebrovascular disorders such as aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, and stroke.

Professionally, he has held a number of prestigious appointments in Houston at the Methodist Hospital, Taub General Hospital, the Veterans Administration Medical Center, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital.

He has served on 21 academic and professional committees, nine medical organizations, and in 1991 was elected President of the World Federation of Interventional and Therapeutic Neuroradiology. His achievements in the medical profession have earned him nine honors and awards.

Dr. Mawad is a graduate of the Université Saint-Joseph School of Medicine. He continued his education and training in New York at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, Saint Luke’s Hospital, the Neurological Institute of New York, and Columbia Presbyterian Center. He is US Board certified, and has licensure for Texas and New York States.

His research has concentrated over the years on the prevention, rapid detection and treatment of cerebrovascular disease, resulting in more than 107 publications in prestigious medical and scientific journals, six book chapters, 24 scientific exhibits, and 211 scientific papers presented at national and international meetings.
