Iona Olive has a varied work experience in the fields of software engineering, QA engineering, teaching, engineering science, lecturing, and hydrology. Iona started their career in 2005 as a Hydrologic Technician at the United States Geological Survey. In 2007, they became a Teacher, High School Math at Austin Independent School District, where they provided instruction in Algebra and Geometry, and served as Family Advocacy Coordinator. In 2010, they began working at The University of Texas at Austin as a Lecturer, Assistant Instructor, and Graduate Research Assistant and Teaching Assistant. Iona taught PGE 310, Formation and Solution of Geosystems Engineering Problems, and provided instruction in MATLAB programming and numerical methods in engineering. Iona also investigated the effects of chemical environment on subcritical crack growth in porous rocks using dual torsion tensile testing, and designed a database to store in-house rock mechanics data. In 2015, they took on roles as a Teacher at Hays CISD and an Engineering Scientist at The University of Texas at Austin. In 2018, they began working at LeanDNA as a Software Engineer and QA Engineer.
Iona Olive began their educational journey in 1999 at Austin Community College. Iona then transferred to The University of Texas at Austin in 2001, where they obtained a Bachelor of Science in Geosystems Engineering and Hydrogeology in 2005. In 2010, they returned to The University of Texas at Austin to pursue a Master of Science in Petroleum Engineering, which they completed in 2013. In 2007, they also obtained a Texas Teaching Certificate in Math/Physical Science/Engineering from the Texas Educators' Association.
