John Starmer has a long history of work experience in the field of cloud computing, marine science and technology. John began their career in 1999 as a Research Associate for the Coral Reef Research Foundation, where they conducted scuba diving to collect and photo-document marine invertebrates for a contract to the National Cancer Institute's drug discovery program. In 2001, they became a Coral Reef Monitoring Biologist for the Coastal Resources Management Office, where they developed a long-term coral reef monitoring program for the Commonwealth. In 2002, they became President/Co-Founder of the Pacific Marine Resources Institute. From 2003 to 2011, they were a PhD Candidate at the Florida Museum of Natural History, where they studied the phylogentics and evolutionary biology of marine invertebrates. In 2011, they founded their own company, John Starmer Systems, where they oversaw all aspects of business management and development. In 2014, they became a Senior Course Developer for OneCloud Consulting, Inc., where they developed OpenStack cloud management system courses for instructor-led and online delivery. In 2019, they became the Chief Scientist for MAUI NUI MARINE RESOURCE COUNCIL INC, where they developed and managed marine water quality and survey programs. Finally, from 2015 to 2019, they were the Director of Education for Kumulus Technologies, where they developed and maintained cloud-native computing-related training for online, on-demand delivery with optional ILT offerings.
John Starmer has a long and varied education history. John obtained their BA in Biology and Art from St. Mary's College of Maryland between 1987 and 1992. John then went on to the University of Guam, where they earned an MSc in Marine Chemical Ecology between 1995 and 2000. Finally, they completed their PhD in Zoology at the University of Florida between 2003 and 2014. In addition to their formal education, John has obtained various certifications, including Effective Listening from LinkedIn (March 2021), Google Cloud Certified Professional - Cloud Architect from Google (June 2018), and two accreditations from Amazon Web Services (AWS): AWS Partner: Accreditation (Business) and AWS Partner: Cloud Economics Accreditation (July 2022).
