Datong Sun has a diverse range of work experience spanning over a decade. Datong began their career at TopGeek Community as a Programmer, where they designed the PyCon China 2011 Official Website. Datong then worked as a Student Developer at Iowa State University, where they contributed to the design and implementation of network monitoring infrastructure and university mailing infrastructure, as well as assisting in security incident investigation.
Datong Sun later joined LinkedIn as a Site Reliability Engineer Intern, where they designed and implemented mobile operation solutions for the Site Reliability Engineering department. Datong also developed web and mobile clients and provisioned server-side infrastructure.
Datong then moved to Cloudflare, Inc. as a Systems Engineer, focusing on the Edge platform team, where they handled tasks such as designing, developing, releasing, and maintaining core CDN features. Datong extensively worked on OpenResty and NGINX core, and also conducted performance tuning and low-level optimizations.
After that, Datong Sun worked as a Technical Partner at OpenResty Inc., where they developed globally distributed and fault-tolerant configuration storage and synchronization mechanisms. Datong also worked on building scalable and real-time cache purging systems.
Their most recent position is at Kong Inc., where they started as a Systems Engineer before being promoted to Tech Lead. As a Tech Lead, Datong Sun is responsible for maintaining the popular OpenResty based Kong Open Source API gateway. Their tasks include participating in roadmap and schedule planning, cross-team collaboration, open source community management and collaboration, team workflow improvement, and providing technical decision-making and directional guidance for the project. Datong is also the original author of Kong's Hybrid mode.
Through their vast work experience, Datong Sun has gained expertise in system engineering, technical leadership, open source development, and project management.
Datong Sun obtained a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Iowa State University, where they studied from 2012 to 2016. In addition to their academic qualifications, they have also earned certifications as a Private Pilot in Instrument Airplane and Airplane Single Engine Land (ASEL) from the Federal Aviation Administration in June 2017 and December 2015 respectively.
