Shugeng Cao

Scientific Advisor at Kairos BioMedical

Dr. Shugeng Cao is a noted scientist and researcher of natural products as potential cancer cures. He is currently a faculty member at the University of Hawaii, and is associated with the University’s Cancer Center, which is a designated affiliate of the National Cancer Institute (at NIH). Prior to his current academic appointment, Dr. Cao worked as a research scientist at Harvard Medical School. He has published voluminous scholarship in peer-review journals, taking an evidence-based approach to measure the effects of traditional herbal products on human health. His research focuses on exploring endophytic fungi and bacteria for anticancer drug discovery. Through multidisciplinary work and collaborations, Dr. Cao uses novel approaches to guide the identification of strains that have the potential to produce anticancer drug leads, including: novel dereplication technique (e.g., LC/MS etc.) to identify strains that produce novel compounds; structure elucidation of active compounds by NMR, chemical modifications and degradations, x-ray analyses; high throughput screening through collaboration with oncologists; and genome sequencing if necessary. Dr. Cao also researches herbal medicines used for diseases related to diabetes, as well as small molecules with various biological functions in bacteria and the human body. He holds several patents. Dr. Cao grew up in Wuhan, China, earned his PhD from National University of Singapore, and held post-doctoral positions at Virginia Tech and Harvard.
