Joseph E. Addiego

Chief Medical Officer at Kairoi Healthcare Strategies

Addiego has forged an exceptional and diverse skill set. His clinical career includes 20 years of practice as a board-certified pediatric hematologist and oncologist. In subsequent roles, he was responsible for developing and implementing guidelines and clinical programs to assist practicing physicians in the prescribing of medicines , improving patient safety, and managing pharmacy costs. Prior to joining Kairoi, he served as Chief Medical Officer for Caremark Rx, Prescription Solutions; when the latter was acquired by UnitedHealthcare it became OptumRx, where Dr. Addiego also was CMO.

With Prescription Solutions, he spearheaded the company’s efforts to provide clients with a quality, cost-effective formulary and results-driven clinical programs. He also led other key strategies, including advancement of quality initiatives, clinical analytics and clinical sales support. As executive consultant for Medicare reform at-risk programs at PacifiCare Health Systems, he led company-wide efforts aimed at evaluating the impact of emerging healthcare legislation, and helped to establish guidelines for Part D drug plan support for seniors.

During his academic and clinical career, Dr. Addiego served as medical director of the Hematology/Oncology department and Associate Medical Director at Children’s Hospital and Research Center in Oakland, California. He has also devoted time to teaching medical students, interns, residents and specialty fellows; conducting clinical and basic science research; and publishing articles in prominent national and international medical journals. He has testified before Congress on healthcare issues and served on multiple advisory panels, executive committees, foundations and task forces.

Dr. Addiego earned his medical degree at the University of California School of Medicine in San Francisco, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha national honor medical society. He currently serves as Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at his alma mater.
