Alex Coles CEng MICE has a diverse work experience spanning different roles and companies. From 2016 to the present, they have been working at John Sisk & Son Ltd, where they began as a Graduate Engineer on the Excelerate Scheme. Alex rotated between projects every eight months, gaining experience in different aspects of the construction industry. Alex'sresponsibilities included site engineering, service avoidance, liaising with building control, and overseeing temporary works.
After completing the Excelerate Scheme, they worked as a Site Engineer on a ~£40 million civils project in Cambridgeshire, where they managed the drainage section and was responsible for procurement, quality control, and handover of all works. Alex then moved on to become a Group R&D Engineer, managing the company's research and development tax relief submissions across the UK, Ireland, and Europe, and developing knowledge sharing systems.
In 2020, Alex took on the role of Strategy & Performance Analyst, where they acted as the interface between business and functional units to implement strategic plans. Alex'sresponsibilities included driving a commercially-focused strategy and performance team, reviewing existing systems and processes, and identifying improvement measures.
Currently, Alex is the Head of Data Insights & Knowledge Management at John Sisk & Son Ltd. In this role, they are responsible for data integrity, process consistency, and business unit accountability. Alex works with key stakeholders to bring a robust strategic planning, reporting, and performance management approach to the organization.
Prior to their current position, Alex worked as an Engineering Technician at Stomor Ltd from 2012 to 2016. Alex also had previous experience at John Sisk & Son Ltd as an Undergraduate Engineer, where they undertook three two-month summer placements, gaining experience in site engineering, logistics, quantity surveying, and tendering.
Before starting their career in construction, Alex worked part-time as a Customer Services Partner at Waitrose from 2008 to 2011.
Alex Coles CEng MICE obtained a Master's Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Bristol from 2011 to 2015. Additionally, from 2013 to 2014, they pursued a Master's Degree in Civil Engineering Year Abroad at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. They completed their high school education at Hitchin Boys' School from 2003 to 2010, with A2 Level studies in Geography, Mathematics, History, Physics, and AS Level studies in Further Mathematics. They also hold certifications in Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) from CITB obtained in 2017 and First Aid at Work from St John Ambulance obtained in 2016. Alex Coles is also a Chartered Civil Engineer, certified by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).
