Humberto Cruz-Chavarría

Director, Second Generation Programming at Jeremiah Program

Humberto Cruz-Chavarría is the current Director of Second Generation Programming at Jeremiah Program. Humberto has over 10 years of experience in the field of education, with a focus on bilingual education and early childhood development.

Cruz-Chavarría began their career as a consultant for Advocacy Work Performance at Todos Pela Educação in Brazil. Humberto then moved to the United States to pursue a graduate degree in Education Policy at Columbia University. While completing their degree, they interned at Human Rights Watch and worked as a consultant for The DREAM Project DR, developing curriculum for their education programs.

After graduation, Cruz-Chavarría worked as an Early Childhood Trainer (English-Spanish) at the NYC Early Childhood Professional Development Institute. Humberto then became the Bilingual Early Childhood Education/Infant-Toddler Specialist at the Committee for Humberto'spanic Children & Families. In 2016, they joined Right To Play as their Program Officer for Educator Support Initiatives.

In 2017, Cruz-Chavarría became the Head Start and Early Head Start Education Director at Kingsbridge Heights Community Center. Humberto held this position for one year before moving to their current role as Director of Multilingual Education in the Division of Early Childhood Education at the NYC Department of Education.

Humberto Cruz-Chavarría has a Master of Arts in Latin American Studies from Stanford University, a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Government, Latin American and Border Studies from The University of Texas at El Paso, and coursework in early childhood education leadership from Harvard Graduate School of Education. Humberto also has a Master of Education in International Educational Development from Teachers College, Columbia University and a certification from Harvard University Graduate School of Education in Certificate in Early Education Leadership (CEEL).
