Stephen is vice-chancellor at the University of Cambridge in England. He is a former director of the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto and former president and vice-chancellor of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. In Montreal he served as president and CEO of the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation and as dean of McGill University’s Faculty of Law. Stephen served on the boards of the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences, the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, Universities Canada, and Public Policy Forum, among others. In 2012 Stephen received the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal, and in 2015 he received the John Read Medal of the Canadian Council of International Law. He was also awarded several honorary degrees and in 2015 he was inducted as an Officer of the Order of Canada.
Stephen holds a PhD in Law from Trinity College in Cambridge, England; LLB and BCL degrees from McGill University in Montreal; and a BA from Harvard University in the USA.
