Vanessa Burns has a diverse work experience spanning from 2008 to 2018. Their most recent role was at InsightRX starting in August 2018, where they worked in product development. Prior to that, from 2015 to 2018, they were the Chief Executive Officer and Founder of LumosTech Sleep Mask, where they successfully raised over $1M in funding and led a cross-functional team. From 2015 to 2016, they worked as a Research Fellow at Allied Minds, gaining experience in technology scouting and investment analysis. Vanessa also pursued their PhD at Stanford University School of Medicine from 2011 to 2016, specializing in Chemical and Systems Biology. Additionally, they served as a Group Leader at Stanford ADVANCE from 2013 to 2014, organizing workshops and activities for incoming graduate students. At Caltech, from 2008 to 2011, Vanessa worked as a Student Tutor and Teaching Assistant, Senior Editor for the Caltech Undergraduate Research Journal, and conducted research in biology and chemistry labs.

Vanessa Burns began their education in 2007 at Caltech, where they pursued a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Bioengineering. Vanessa completed their undergraduate studies in 2011. In 2009, they briefly attended UCL, focusing on Biology, although no degree was specified. Following their bachelor's degree, Vanessa Burns enrolled at Stanford University in 2011 to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Chemical and Systems Biology. Vanessa successfully completed their doctoral studies in 2016.
