Gina Weir-Smith has worked as a Research Assistant at the Institute for Geographic Analysis at Stellenbosch University from March 1992 to January 1994. Following this, they joined the Department of Land Affairs as a Senior Industrial Technician from February 1994 to August 1995. Currently, they hold the position of Head of Geospatial Analytics at HSRC, where they have been working since September 1995. At HSRC, Gina focuses on socio-economic applications of GIS, including projects such as the Catalogue of fundamental geo-spatial datasets for Africa, poverty mapping, and spatial optimization of services.
Gina Weir-Smith earned a Bachelor of Arts Honors degree in Geography from Stellenbosch University in 1990. From 1992 to 1994, they pursued a Master's degree in Geography specializing in GIS at the same institution. Later, they attended the University of KwaZulu-Natal from 2010 to 2015, where they obtained a Ph.D. in Geography and Environmental Management.
