Niels van der Vegt is an experienced professional in the field of water engineering, currently serving as an advisor for safety and crisis management at HKV lijn in water since January 2022. Simultaneously, Niels is pursuing a PhD at the University of Twente, researching the erosion of dike inner slopes following grass cover failure, with a focus on methods to quantify the remaining strength of clay layers under wave overtopping stress. Niels has previously completed a master's degree in Civil Engineering, specializing in Hydraulic Engineering, at TU Delft, and has engaged in various roles, including a graduate researcher examining damage impacts on armor layers, a student assistant for flood defenses, and internships at Witteveen+Bos and Boskalis Nederland, contributing to civil engineering projects and design.
