As a program officer in the foundation's Science Program, Adam is part of the team managing the Marine Microbiology and Symbiosis in Aquatic Systems Initiatives. He also leads awards advancing science and technology policy fellowships in Washington D.C., Sacramento, and other state capitols. In addition, Adam oversees grants in partnership with the foundation’s Environment program focused on coral reef conservation and freshwater resources in California.

Prior to joining the foundation, Adam was an AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow at the U.S. Department of State. He has a broad research background in marine microbiology, natural products biochemistry, genetics, genomics, and drug discovery. Adam has conducted fieldwork in a variety of temperate and tropical locations around the world.

Adam received a B.S. in biology from Providence College, an M.S. in marine biology from the University of North Carolina Wilmington, and a Ph.D. in oceanography from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego. He completed postdoctoral research as an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow at the University of Tübingen in Germany.
