Dr. Randal O’Brien has served as superintendent since 2014 and is the district’s 15th superintendent in its 100-year history. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business management from East Texas Baptist University, a master’s degree in education in administration from Sam Houston State University, and a doctorate from Lamar University. His experience includes more than 25 years in education along with another six in the business sector prior to entering education.
He joined GCCISD as deputy superintendent for administrative services, overseeing the planning, design, and development of three elementary schools and continuing to facilitate the $267 million 2013 Bond. During his tenure, the district has completed a new Transportation Center and a Technology Center, established seven career academies, opened the new IMPACT Early College High School, ensuring that all schools received a “Met Standard” rating from TEA, and passed the 2019 Bond.
Prior to joining GCCISD, O’Brien served as superintendent of Hubbard ISD, a high school principal in Blooming Grove ISD, a middle school principal in Tarkington ISD, an intermediate school assistant principal in Willis, and assistant principal in Montgomery ISD. At Conroe ISD, he was the vocational marketing coordinator and has taught marketing education, math, science, and physical education, along with coaching a variety of sports.
He and his wife Monica, a high school English teacher, have three children – Tyler, a graduate of Baylor University; Kendal, a graduate of Texas Woman’s University and a registered nurse and Riley, a student at Trinity University.
