Ryan Owens has a diverse work experience in the geoscience field. Ryan started their career as a Data Manager at Geoscience Australia in 2006, working in the Petroleum and Marine Division. In 2007, they briefly worked as a Contract Geologist at Barrick Gold Corporation. Ryan then joined MMG Limited in 2008 as a Project Geologist, where they worked until 2009. In 2010, Ryan joined the Australian National University as a PhD student. Ryan returned to Geoscience Australia in 2012, this time as a Geological Indexer. Ryan currently holds the position of Basin Analyst at Geoscience Australia, which they started in 2014.

Ryan Owens pursued their education in the field of geology and paleoceanography. Ryan completed their Bachelor of Science (BSc Hons) degree, with a double major in geology, from The Australian National University in the years 2000 to 2007. Later on, between 2010 and 2016, they obtained their Doctorate of Philosophy from the same institution, specializing in paleoceanography. Additionally, in 2011, Ryan attended the Urbino Summer School in Paleoclimatology to enhance their skills in past global change reconstruction and modeling techniques.
