John Rowan has extensive experience in higher education administration and academic roles. John started their career at Purdue University Calumet in 2010 as the Interim Dean of the School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. From 2014 to 2016, they served as the Dean of the College of Education at the same institution. In 2014, they also took on the role of Dean of the Honors College at Purdue University Northwest, where they also worked as a Professor of Philosophy from 1997 to 2018. In 2018, Rowan became the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at LSU of Alexandria. Most recently, they were appointed Vice President for Enrollment Management at Francis Marion University in 2023.

John Rowan received their Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Philosophy from the University of Virginia, attending from 1985 to 1997.
