Julian McNamara has held various engineering roles throughout their career. Julian began their career in 1994 as a Soldier/Mechanical Engineer in the NZ Army before moving on to the New Zealand Automobile Association (NZAA) as a Service Officer. In 2011, they became a Chief Engineer for a Commercial Yacht, managing all systems and overseeing a 6-month refit. Following this, they worked as an Engineer Officer for Interislander, where they were in charge of the watch and ran the AMOS planned maintenance system. Julian then joined Teekay Corporation in 2015 as a Chief Engineer, responsible for managing all systems aboard. From 2016 to 2019, they worked for Riverside Marine as a Chief Engineer, managing two vessels within BHP Billiton's fleet. Currently, they serve as the Chief Engineer at Fortescue Metals Group.
Julian McNamara has a National Certificate of Competency in Marine Engineering from the University of Southampton, which was obtained from 2003 to 2010. Julian also has a high school degree in Maths, English, Sciences, Economic Studies, and Accounting from St. Johns College Hamilton NZ, completed from 1980 to 1984. In addition, McNamara has a Certificate of Competency in Marine Engineering from Solent University, although the specific years are not provided. Julian has obtained several additional certifications, including Chief Engineer (Unlimited - Oceans) from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency in December 2020, Chief Engineer from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority in December 2020, and Marine Engineer Cert2 with Chief Engineers Endorsement from Maritime New Zealand in December 2017.
